The agronomy research assistant will be responsible for supporting the agronomy efforts of the Hawaii Research Center with primary focus on agronomic activities necessary to reliably produce high quality seed for the research organization.
The research assistant will be performing tasks in the Agronomy Department, including but not limited to, working with crop protection, land planning and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), regulatory and equipment operation.

What You’ll Do:

  • Operate spraying equipment (such as Hagie and Millers). Always ensure the proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment) and ensure label directions are followed.
  • Assist with data entry in the Agronomy Databases
  • Assist with printing and posting WPS records.
  • Assist with IPM chemical inventory management and tracking.
  • Assist with spraying, posting signs, cleaning equipment, replacing nozzles, etc.
  • Maintain all equipment in proper and safe working condition.
  • Make certain chemicals are applied in accordance with chemical labels.
  • Maintain chemical inventory and maintain an orderly pesticide storage room.
  • Communicate with supervisor on spraying activities.
  • Assist with the deployment of new equipment for IPM.
  • Provide input to supervisor and assist with short and long term planning.
  • Miscellaneous tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Participate and complete personal development activities as part of a performance management and development plan.
  • Support netting activities (operating equipment and on the ground)
  • Assist with developing protocols.
  • Spraying fence lines and fallow areas.
  • Mowing fallow areas.
  • Crop scouting.
  • Mini disking between planting blocks.
  • Track and enter data in databases for regulatory activities.
  • Assist Regulatory and compliance with field volunteering and monitoring.
  • Operate equipment for field destruction, volunteering and drip tape extraction.
  • Assist with hand pulling drip tape when needed.
  • Installing K lines and turning water on and off.
  • Cover crop planting.
  • Support on pollinations during the busy season.

Qualifications

What Skills You Need:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma/GED
  • 2 to 4 years of tropical agriculture experience in IPM spray and farm equipment operation preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of computers with the ability to utilize Microsoft office products.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read/interpret instructions and carry out tasks in absence of supervision.
  • Work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Tolerance and ability to work in outdoor tropical agriculture setting.
  • Ability to communicate in English and work with others in a team setting and diverse cultural backgrounds and languages.
  • Valid driver’s license required and CDL preferred or willing to obtain.
  • Ability to tow trailers.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays during seasonal peaks and/or based on field needs.
  • Occasionally required to lift at least 20 to 40 lbs.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $30.04 – $35.60 hourly. This reflects a reasonable estimate of the targeted base salary for this role. This role is also eligible for an annual bonus. Based on factors such as geographic location and candidate qualifications, actual base pay is determined when an employment offer is made.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $30.04 – $35.60 hourly. This reflects a reasonable estimate of the targeted base salary for this role. This role is also eligible for an annual bonus.
