Description

The Agronomy Research Associate will be responsible for supporting agronomy efforts at Waimea Research Center that are necessary to produce high-quality seeds for the global agricultural enterprise. The Research Associate will oversee mainly irrigation and plant nutrition related programs to optimize crop growth at the center. The Research Associate will also serve as the backup person for land prep, crop protection, and IPM programs. Job description may change with business needs at any time, and other duties may be assigned by management.

This role will be performed on-site at the Corteva research center in Waimea on the island of Kauai.

Responsibilities – What You’ll Do:

The Research Associate will work with the agronomy staff for planning and operation of field activities. The Research Associate will lead irrigation, fertilization, field volunteering programs. The Research Associate will also ensure all policies, protocols, and regulatory requirements are followed.

The Research Associate oversees and executes irrigation and crops fertility programs. Evaluate soil types and implement the newest technology of fertilizers and water management to optimize plant growth. Evaluate and design drip tape irrigation systems. Analyze soil and foliar tissue samples data for water and nutrient management. Adjust fertility programs based on extreme weather conditions or soil type. Control the inventory of irrigation parts, equipment and fertilizers. Maintain work areas and equipment in good condition. Apply irrigation to harvested fields to complete field volunteering processes in a timely manner.

The Research Associate is responsible for supervising Research Assistants and temporary labor. Ensure daily irrigation and fertilization programs are executed on timely matter to produce high quality seeds.

The Research Associate will cover other agronomy needs including but not limited to land prep and planting, crop protection, and IPM program when required.

The Research Associate will provide oversight, maintenance, and calibration of weather stations and interpret data for irrigation scheduling

Qualifications

Education and Experiences:

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or scientific related field or minimum of 2 to 4 years of industry related experience, or equivalent level of relevant education and experience.

Competences and Experience Desired:

  • Supervise employees and temporary workers ensuring daily irrigation and fertilization programs are executed.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate, maintain, and repair irrigation equipment.
  • Organization and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities. Work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills (office suite products, learn to manage irrigation/fertigation software and Smartsheet).
  • Tolerance and ability to work in an outdoor tropical agriculture setting. Flexibility to work early in the morning, day shift, evenings, weekends and/or holidays when needed.
  • Ability to communicate in English and work in a team setting with others of diverse cultural backgrounds and languages.
  • Driver license. Valid CMV license or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • CDL is desirable.
  • Experience with drones or FAA drone license
  • Occasionally required to lift 20 to 40 lbs.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $68,500 – $85,630 yearly. This reflects a reasonable estimate of the targeted base salary for this role. This role is also eligible for an annual bonus. Based on factors such as geographic location and candidate qualifications, actual base pay is determined when an employment offer is made.
